Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to seek refuge from five things: "From cowardice, miserliness, reaching old age while sinful, the trials of the heart, and the punishment of the grave."

the Jews would have turned me into a donkey
(1) The statement "the Jews would have turned me into a donkey" means they would have made me foolish and humiliated. The meaning is that they were sorcerers who were angered by my Islam. Were it not for my seeking refuge with these words, they would have overpowered me, subdued me, and made me foolish and humiliated like a donkey - which is a metaphor for humiliation. It does not mean they actually transformed him, as transforming realities is only in Allah's power, as He says: "Be as apes, despised" (2:65), and "It seemed to him from their magic that their ropes and staffs were moving" (20:66). This shows the extent of their magic, which was the pinnacle of what sorcerers could achieve in Pharaoh's time while seeking his wealth and status. If they could have done more, they would have done so against Moses. If they couldn't do it against Moses, how could they do it against the best of creation who manifested truth? As Al-Bayhawi said: Magic refers to what is achieved through seeking help from Satan in matters beyond human capability. If Satan cannot transform himself into a donkey, let alone others, how could those who seek his help transform realities?
As for the statement in Al-Madarik: "Magic has reality according to Ahl al-Sunnah (may Allah increase them) and is illusion according to Mu'tazilah (may Allah disgrace them)", it means magic is real and occurs, not that it is false illusion like seeing one thing as two or hallucinations from brain disorders. This is evidenced by the Quran and Sunnah, including the verses: "They teach people magic" (2:102), "And from the evil of those who blow on knots" (113:4), which refers to the famous Jewish magic. The consensus of Ahl al-Sunnah and Mu'tazilah against actual transformation, along with reason and the absence of such occurrences in creation, proves its impossibility. Claims of witnessing such are false tales told in coffee shops and believed by foolish women and weak-minded men.

Zayd ibn Arqam (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from weakness, laziness, cowardice, miserliness, senility, and the punishment of the grave. O Allah, grant my soul piety, purify it - You are the best to purify it - You are its Guardian and Protector. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from knowledge that doesn't benefit, a heart that doesn't humble, a soul that isn't satisfied, and a supplication that isn't answered."
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to say: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from four things: knowledge that doesn't benefit, a heart that doesn't humble, a soul that isn't satisfied, and a supplication that isn't heard."
Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) reported that among the supplications of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the removal of Your blessing, the change of Your protection, the suddenness of Your punishment, and all Your displeasure."
Amr ibn Shu'ayb reported from his father, from his grandfather (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "When any of you is frightened in sleep, let him say: 'I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from His anger, His punishment, the evil of His servants, from the whisperings of devils and their presence,' for they will not harm him." Abdullah ibn Amr used to teach this to his children who had reached puberty, and for those who hadn't, he would write it on a piece of paper and hang it around their necks.

from the whisperings of devils
(1) The statement "from the whisperings of devils" indicates that fright in dreams comes from Satan. As mentioned in Al-Mirqat.
Note 2
he would hang it around their necks
(2) The statement "he would hang it around their necks" establishes the permissibility of wearing amulets containing Allah's names. As stated in Al-Mirqat. Some people confuse amulets (ta'wiz) with talismans (tamimah), but they are different. Talismans are beads, while amulets are permissible if they contain Quran or Allah's names. Al-Zayla'i said: Some people confuse ruqya (healing recitations) with talismans, which were strings tied around necks or arms in pre-Islamic times to supposedly ward off harm - this is prohibited and considered disbelief. In Al-Mujtaba: There are differences regarding healing with Quran - whether by reciting over the sick, writing and hanging it, or washing the writing and drinking it. The Prophet (ﷺ) used to seek refuge for himself, and people today follow this practice based on authentic narrations. There is no harm in women or menstruating women wearing amulets on their arms if properly wrapped. In Al-Khaniya: A woman wanted to wear an amulet to make her husband love her - this is prohibited. Writing religious texts during non-Islamic festivals or nailing them to doors is disliked as it disrespects Allah's name. [Summarized from Al-Durr al-Mukhtar]
